Profile of a Petroleum Engineer

Please refer to the profile of an Engineer, with a few additions. The job could take you to remote places where you will not only have to travel to regularly, but also to stay; working conditions can be tough and you have to be an all-weather person. Oil exploration is also risky business as it is a gamble when you undertake prospecting and nothing turns up. So you must be able to take losing in your stride and loads of patience too.

Qualifications

A degree in Petroleum Engineering or Engineering or the earth sciences such as geology, mining, geophysics, etc) to begin with. As with all engineers, you will need to be certified by the professional engineering body to practise as an engineer.
